Short update

Time is passing by, and I am not getting a lot of new pictures to post, but progress is being made. There has been lots of plumbing and electrical work done on every site it seems. There has been painting done, doors installed, trim put on and flooring and kitchen cabinets installed at the "K" house. The "A" house is painted inside and out, and has laminate flooring, and now is getting interior doors and trim. The "J" house is getting sprinklers installed today, and at the "B" house we are doing floor repairs. We are doing railings on porches, and still working on getting final inspection on the "C" house. Sometimes things feel like they are going too slow for our liking, but we just have to remind ourselves to do one thing at a time, and work will progress. We would just like to finish some of these projects before we are out of here at the end of the week. Our gang from 2 weeks ago
Last week's group
I rode with Kerry one day to get supplies and to deliver them to the sites. We got to see all of the houses that day, but had to stop for lunch in between. This is at the Barrett Cafe. We drive by here every day on the way to our job sites and this time we decided to stop and enjoy some lunch outside on their veranda. It was a nice interlude in a busy day.

Phone reception at some of the sites is a challenge. At one of the sites you actually have to go up the mountain to get cell reception. Most of the time you don't have to go all the way up, but this day, Kerry had to keep climbing till he had reached a fairly high point. Can you see him up there at the top of the hill. My camera hardly had enough zoom to get him.

Things we see

As we travel around here we get a variety of views to enjoy. The mountains and the rocks are quite different from what we see on the prairies of Manitoba.

This is what camp looks like on Sunday afternoons, before the volunteers arrive, and before the work week starts. Pretty quiet place.

This is what it looks like if you come on Friday at lunch time. Looks like a party! Not so quiet anymore. Photos courtesy of Glenn and Ben. Thanks!

More progress

At the "K" house there was some landscaping done outside,

and inside they put down the linoleum, as well as the laminate flooring, and started installing kitchen cabinets. Looks like they cut the laminate outside and passed it in through the window.

Our newest site got the foundation poured.

Progress Report

The "A" house outside. At the beginning of the week there wasn't much paint on it but as the week progressed the color improved. By the end of the week the Sunbath color was on as well as the TerraCotta trim. It looks nice and cheerful.

Inside the house there was drywall hanging and mudding happening.

the "J" house made good progress as well, by Friday afternoon the roof had shingles, as well as stairs on the porches.

Week 4

This is the group shot from last Friday. This time Kerry managed to get into the shot, thanks to the automatic setting. It was a fun week with all the folks from Rosenort here. There was lots of laughter, visiting, games, good natured banter and teasing.

Kinda looks like there wasn't much work done though!

Getting ready for work in the morning.

Last minute instructions from the PD.

last week

The "J" house made good progress last week. One afternoon the floor got nailed on and then soon the walls were up, and sheeted and by Friday there were rafters or trusses up already.

We also poured the floors for the porches.

Just another view.

the J's are very happy and excited about the progress of their house. On Saturday morning Mr. J carried his wife over the threshold and then they stood inside and just imagined how everything would look once the house is finished.

One of the things we have to do on the job sites is make sure there is a large area around the house free of trees and garbage so that there is a buffer should another fire come along. We had cut down and chipped some trees on this site, and the next job was to grind the stumps, so Kerry rented a stump grinder and let the boys at them.
Kerry is the supply man on the job. Sometimes we can get the lumber delivered but this time he went and picked up what we needed for the framing package. Looks like he had a pretty good load.

The "A" house with it's first coat of color.

One end and one side got done before it was time to call it quits for the weekend. Inside the drywall was getting hung and so we will finish that off next week, and after inspection we can get to taping and mudding.

last week

Last weeks crew. 15 Old Order men from Wisconsin, 2 from Ontario, and the regular long term crew, except for Kerry.

Why doesn't my remote work? Thought we had it all set up after some practise yesterday, but doesn't have much distance so Kerry didn't get on the group picture, but it seems to work close up :-)

This group of volunteers worked hard, played hard and ate LOTS! The cooks were really challenged to make enough food this week. Friday we finished off with 4 -28" pizzas. The look on these boys faces was quite something when they saw the huge pizzas, but that didn't stop them from digging in and consuming most of it, and then enjoying large bowls full of ice cream and cookies.

It was warm on the deck and great for our lunch outside. Afterwards there was a quick game of volleyball, some vehicle washing and maintenance, bunk room and bathroom clean up and then we piled everyone into the van and 3 half tons and headed to San Diego. The short term crew had a hotel booked for the night, and the long term crew went out for our weekly supper, and to bid farewell to our construction foreman, Ernie and wife Erna. They were great to have on board and we will miss having Ernie on the job, giving guidance on the jobsites and being our quality control guy.
